A collection of correspondence from the Frere family to Cambridge has recently come to light, revealing the esteem that John Hookham Frere held for Mikiel Anton Vassalli. This intellectual connection between the two scholars was poised to result in a Maltese grammar publication through Cambridge University Press, a project that never materialized owing to Vassalli's obstinacy.
