The Ottoman cemetery: A gesture of peace and magnanimity – Members’ Event

Members of Heritage Malta can enjoy two separate guided tours of the Turkish Cemetery scheduled for Saturday, 12th September 2026. This historic burial ground represents a significant diplomatic gesture from the Ottoman Sultanate toward the British Crown and Malta's inhabitants, showcasing the enduring cultural partnership between Malta and Türkiye. Serving as the final resting place for Muslims, this tranquil sanctuary sits mere metres from the bustling urban landscape. Designed by Emanuele Luigi Galizia and conceived under Sultan Abdul Aziz Khan's vision, construction was finalised in 1774. The site stands as a remarkable manifestation of Orientalist design in Malta and displays exceptional funerary architecture characterised by elaborate decorative elements. Its distinctive aesthetic combines an imposing external facade with a modest interior space, where ornamental refinement balances with restraint. Ahead of its era and remaining visually compelling in contemporary times, this location provides a peaceful retreat immediately adjacent to the fast-paced surroundings beyond its boundaries.
