The Ottoman cemetery: A gesture of peace and magnanimity – Members’ Event

Members of Heritage Malta are invited to participate in two separate guided excursions through the Turkish Cemetery on Saturday, 19 September 2026. Established as a symbol of harmony, the Ottoman Cemetery represents an enduring bond of respect from the Ottoman Sultanate toward the British Crown and the people of Malta—reflecting the rich historical relationship between Malta and Türkiye. This burial ground serves as the eternal resting place for Muslims and functions as a tranquil sanctuary nestled amid bustling urban activity. Designed by Emanuele Luigi Galizia under the patronage of Sultan Abdul Aziz Khan, the cemetery was finished in 1774. The site stands as a rare manifestation of Orientalism within Malta and demonstrates remarkable funerary design featuring intricate ornamentation throughout. Its architectural philosophy employs an imposing façade contrasted with a modest interior, seamlessly blending visual refinement with understated elegance. Remarkable during its period of construction and striking in its contemporary appeal, this location provides a serene refuge in close proximity to the dynamic energy surrounding it.
