Malta’s Sustainable Development Action Days 2026: From Ideas To Impact!

Heritage Malta is hosting a public presentation on Saturday, 3rd October at 11:00am at the Malta National Aquarium in Buġibba as part of Malta's Sustainable Development Action Days 2026. The session will examine the relationship between Malta's submerged cultural heritage and its marine biodiversity. Attendees will learn how archaeological investigation, marine biology, and advanced technological tools are contributing to enhanced preservation and comprehension of the historic wrecks situated throughout the Maltese archipelago and the biological communities that inhabit them. Drawing on projects like WreckLife, which treats historic shipwrecks as dual entities—both archaeological artifacts and living components of the broader marine ecosystem—the presentation will illustrate the interconnections between wrecks and aquatic organisms, as well as how climate shifts and human impact are influencing their long-term prospects. Following the talk, guests are welcome to view the submerged cultural heritage display and explore the remainder of the Malta National Aquarium.
