Inspired by History: From Tapestries to Contemporary Fashion
Heritage Malta welcomes guests to explore Inspired by History: From Tapestries to Contemporary Fashion, an exhibition marking the homecoming of the Grand Master's Palace's historic tapestries to Malta. The display pairs these treasured textiles with modern fashion designs by Charles & Ron, each piece drawing inspiration from the historical tapestries on view. Commissioned in 1708 by Grand Master Ramon Perellos y Roccaful from the prestigious Gobelins Manufactory in Paris, these tapestries were created as a gioia—a ceremonial gift to the Order following his appointment. The works showcase imaginative depictions of exotic plants and animals from territories discovered during the century before, and have been housed within the Grand Master's Palace since 1710. After undergoing conservation treatment at De Wit in Belgium, the tapestries now return to their home as the sole complete surviving collection based on the original designs of the celebrated Tenture des Indes, the same series represented at the French Royal Palace of Versailles. The exhibition offers a contemporary perspective on these historical masterpieces.
