Hidden Goddesses: Unseen Paintings by Giorgio Preca

Building on the acclaimed 2021 Giorgio Preca retrospective at MUŻA, the artist's relatives have recently brought to light 29 previously unknown paintings centred on the ancient Maltese Goddess. Drawing inspiration from the celebrated "Sleeping Lady" artefact, these works demonstrate Preca's artistic evolution and deep connection to Malta's cultural traditions. Produced during his time outside the country, the paintings showcase his signature aesthetic—a fusion of indigenous motifs with contemporary artistic movements. The exhibition investigates Preca's persistent emotional bond with Malta and delves into the enigmas surrounding the Goddess herself alongside these long-concealed creations. Furthermore, it situates these pieces within Malta's post-independence cultural development, institutional exhibition practices, and processes of national identity construction. Hidden Goddesses: Unseen Paintings by Giorgio Preca continues through 4th October 2026, with entry available as part of your National Museum of Archaeology visit. The venue operates daily from 09:00 to 19:00, accepting visitors until 18:30.
