Hidden Goddesses: Unseen Paintings by Giorgio Preca

Building on the acclaim of Giorgio Preca's 2021 presentation at MUŻA, the artist's relatives have brought to light 31 previously unknown pieces centered on the Maltese Goddess. Numerous works drew inspiration from the celebrated "Sleeping Lady," demonstrating Preca's artistic development and deep connection to Malta's cultural traditions. Produced during periods when the artist resided beyond Malta's shores, these paintings showcase his distinctive approach, merging indigenous motifs with modernist sensibilities. The display celebrates Preca's constant allegiance to his Maltese roots while investigating the enigma surrounding the Goddess herself and these newly revealed creations. The exhibition further considers how they fit within Malta's post-independence artistic evolution, institutional collections, and the construction of national identity. Hidden Goddesses: Unseen Paintings by Giorgio Preca continues through October 4th, 2026, with entry provided as part of the National Museum of Archaeology ticket. The museum operates daily from 09:00 to 19:00, with final entry at 18:30.
