Teatru Manoel and the Malta National Opera together bring Verdi's humorous "Falstaff" to the stage. Based on Arrigo Boito's Italian-language adaptation of Shakespeare's The Merry Wives of Windsor and passages from Henry IV Parts 1 and 2, this work debuted on 9 February 1893 at La Scala in Milan. The penultimate of Verdi's 26 operatic compositions, Falstaff stands as his second comedic venture and his third adaptation of Shakespeare's works, preceded by Macbeth and Otello. The narrative centers on the lusty Sir John Falstaff's unsuccessful and often absurd attempts to seduce a pair of wives to plunder their husbands' fortunes.
