Cruising to Filfla

Heritage Malta is hosting an excursion on August 23rd that will take you through the fascinating history and natural wonders of Filfla and Malta's Grand Harbour in Valletta, recognised as one of the Mediterranean's most spectacular natural harbours. During your boat journey along Malta's eastern and southern coastlines, you'll learn about Filfla's geological origins, the background of its name, why it attracted pirates throughout history, its role as a bombing practice site, and the diverse wildlife currently inhabiting the island. Watch carefully for encounters with seabirds, sea turtles, and dolphins during your voyage. The Grand Harbour boasts millennia of historical significance, functioning as a crucial maritime crossroads from ancient Neolithic times through Phoenician, Maltese, and British periods. The waterway is encircled by substantial defensive structures including Fort St Elmo, Fort St Angelo, and Fort Ricasoli, which demonstrate the region's strategic military value. The Grand Harbour continues to play a central role in Maltese culture today, combining centuries-old fortifications with contemporary significance.
