W.A Mozart’s The Magic Flute
Beloved for its magical enchantment and stirring orchestral work, Mozart's The Magic Flute merges whimsical storytelling with wonderfully crafted melodies. The narrative traces young Prince Tamino's quest to save Pamina from the dark sorcerer Sarastro, partnered with his resourceful companion Papageno, a bird-catcher wielding an enchanted flute. This production brings together the accomplished artists of the Opera Nova Project with musicians from the Fames Institute — an ensemble of talented young performers spanning Europe and Malta — under the artistic vision of director Denise Mulholland and conductor Philip Walsh. Uniting Opera Nova Project and Teatru Manoel, this collaboration showcases a remarkable cast and production team dedicated to bringing this timeless work to life. Performances are delivered in the original German, accompanied by English translations projected above the stage. Cast members include Tom Armitage and Stanley Joe Portelli sharing the role of Tamino, Joseph Cutajar as Papageno, Mark Bartolo as both Sarastro and Speaker of the Temple, Francesca Aquilina and Mariette Borg as Pamina, Elinor Popham as the Queen of the Night, along with Bettina Zammit and Gabrielle Portelli as Papagena. The ensemble includes singers portraying the three Ladies, three Spirits, temple representatives, slaves, and guards, with additional creatives including Matthew Cassar as set consultant, Christopher Gatt overseeing lighting, Talitha Dimech handling makeup, Michael and Guy managing hair design, and Karl Cassar serving as assistant director.
