Fattartha – ċelebrazzjoni tal-ftira u l-identità
Il-ftira represents far more than sustenance for many Maltese people—it embodies cherished memories and nostalgia. The experience recalls warm summer days spent lounging by the seaside, the comforting aroma of freshly baked bread wafting through village streets, and simple meals shared with loved ones. On Thursday, 28 May, from 7:00pm to 10:00pm, Heritage Malta invites you to delve deeper into this humble yet significant bread during an exclusive evening at the Palazz tal-Inkwiżitur in Birgu. Dr. Noel Buttigieg, a food historian specializing in bread and member of the Taste History team, will offer fascinating insights into the ftira's historical journey, its contemporary significance, and its distinction as Malta's inaugural entry into UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2020. Following the presentation, you'll observe the preparation of traditional preserved vegetables and ġardiniera—common ftira accompaniments—before crafting your own loaf and savoring it amid the centuries-old atmosphere of the Palace. Tickets are available for purchase online or at any Heritage Malta museum or venue.
