Seafaring in Prehistory
Children aged 8 and above are encouraged to participate in Seafaring in Prehistory, an activity offered as part of the Student Summer Programme. The programme takes place on 30th July at 9:00am at Ħal Tarxien Prehistoric Complex. This interactive experience guides young learners through Malta's ancient maritime traditions, examining the methods prehistoric communities employed to navigate ocean waters. Participants will investigate the significance of vessel carvings—ancient markings etched into stone that represent boats and offer crucial information about Malta's seafaring heritage. The Ship Graffiti Project component allows children to understand how these inscriptions enhance knowledge of Malta's submerged archaeological treasures. The activity culminates in a practical workshop where children will decorate sails using ochre pigment, drawing inspiration from the natural materials and methods that early maritime peoples may have employed. Attendance costs €10 per child, which covers entry for one child and one supervising adult. Online ticket booking is available here.
