Schubert and Beethoven

This recital features two exceptional piano sonatas – Schubert's A minor work D. 784, an emotionally intense composition created during a period of profound sadness for the composer in 1823, followed by Beethoven's renowned Appassionata (Sonata no. 23 in F minor). Though Schubert enjoys considerable renown, he is frequently positioned as Beethoven's artistic heir, yet his sonatas remain surprisingly overlooked in concert programmes. With the exception of a handful of pieces, including one of his final compositions in Bb major, the majority of his sonatas see limited performance without clear justification. By presenting this programme, the composer receives long-overdue acknowledgment, as his works form a natural extension of Beethoven's legacy. This recital aims to generate renewed enthusiasm for Schubert's output in advance of the forthcoming bicentenary of his passing in 2028, which follows Beethoven's 200th anniversary in 2027.
