Heritage Malta invites you to a lecture by Anthony Camenzuli, a Maltese historian, educator, and librarian whose scholarly work examines the social and cultural aspects of Malta during the eighteenth century, with particular emphasis on the Roman Inquisition. The lecture takes place on Thursday, 18 June at 7:00pm at the Inquisitor's Palace in Birgu. This presentation reveals the human stories behind the Inquisition's records and data. Drawing on more than 1,200 cases and thousands of accusations, it explores what people believed in, what they feared, and how they responded to religious authority. Most cases centred on witchcraft and superstition, though sentences were often lenient or non-existent, suggesting an institution losing its influence yet still reflecting Maltese society's values. The lecture also examines the accused—their backgrounds and social standing.
