European Archaeology Days – Salina Bay Excavation Open Day
Celebrating European Archaeology Days this year, we welcome you to discover Malta's submerged cultural legacy on June 12th at Salina Bay, running from 10:00am until 2:00pm. This collaborative initiative between Heritage Malta's Underwater Cultural Heritage Unit and the University of Malta's Maritime Archaeology Programme presents an exceptional chance for the community to witness active underwater archaeological work firsthand. Excavation team members will serve as guides, revealing the secrets contained within the bay's depths. Participants willing to bring their own snorkelling equipment can join guided groups to observe the excavation zone underwater, experiencing the excitement of submarine archaeology in action. Those preferring to remain on dry land can explore a full 360° immersive virtual experience titled "Dive into History" showcasing the underwater location, alongside hands-on sessions with artefacts that illuminate Malta's seafaring heritage. A modest collection of artefacts unearthed in earlier seasons will also be on display.
