European Archaeology Days – St Paul’s Catacombs
The Curatorial Section is organizing guided visits to St Paul's Catacombs in Rabat as part of this year's European Archaeology Days. On Sunday, 14th June, hourly tours will be conducted alternately in English and Maltese between 9:00am and 12:00pm, welcoming participants of all ages. Tours begin at 9:00am (English), followed by 10:00am (Maltese), 11:00am (English), and 12:00pm (Maltese). These visits examine why St Paul's Catacombs received the European Heritage Label, emphasizing its significance in Europe's shared cultural heritage. The site's underground burial practices demonstrate how Mediterranean traditions influenced Malta while maintaining its own distinctive architectural character and integration with the natural environment. Through exploration of the catacombs' structural design, decorative elements, and displayed objects, attendees will develop a comprehensive perspective on the historical and cultural dimensions of this important burial complex.
